What Does THC-Infused Mean? Reading an Infused Drink Label

The ShipSips Team

"THC-infused" means THC has been added to a product, so it becomes part of the food or drink itself. A THC-infused seltzer is a seltzer with THC mixed into it. The label should then tell you how much THC is in it, usually in milligrams per can or per serving.

The word gets used loosely in marketing, so this guide explains what "infused" means on a THC drink label, how THC gets into a water-based drink, how to read the ingredient list, and what to check before you buy. It is general information, not medical or legal advice.

What does THC-infused mean?

Dictionaries give "infuse" two related meanings. Wiktionary lists "to cause to become an element of something; to insert or fill," and also "to steep in a liquid, so as to extract the soluble constituents," the way you infuse tea. On a THC drink, the first meaning is the one that applies: THC has been made part of the beverage.

"Infused" doesn't tell you the strength, the source, or the form of THC. For that, you need the rest of the label.

What is a THC-infused drink?

A THC-infused drink is a beverage, such as a seltzer, soda, lemonade, or alcohol-free spirit, with THC added during manufacturing. The drinks we sell use hemp-derived Delta-9 THC. Under the current federal definition (7 U.S.C. §1639o), hemp is cannabis with no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis.

The THC in a hemp-derived drink is still THC. The National Institute on Drug Abuse describes THC as having "intoxicating—mind altering—effects." So an infused drink is not a flavored seltzer that happens to mention cannabis; it is a product with an active ingredient, meant for adults 21 and over.

How THC is infused into a water-based drink

To get THC into a water-based drink, beverage makers use THC that has been prepared to mix into water. Labels describe it with words like "water soluble," "nano-emulsified" or "emulsion." You can see this in the ingredient lists of drinks we carry, as printed on each product page:

  • Hometown Hero lemonades: "Nano-Emulsified Water Soluble Hemp-Derived Delta-9 THC Distillate."
  • Willie's Social Tonic: "THC Emulsion," along with CBD and CBG emulsions.
  • Wyld sparkling waters: "Hemp Extract (Ethanol)."
  • Torch seltzers: "Hemp Derived Cannabinoid Encapsulations."
  • Habit syrups: "Nano-Encapsulated Hemp Oil."

Different words, same idea: the THC has been processed so it mixes into a drink. We don't make claims about how one method feels compared with another, and we don't promise onset times for any product.

THC-infused vs. CBD and other cannabinoids

Some infused drinks add more than THC. Willie's & Soda seltzers list 10mg hemp-derived Delta-9 THC, 2mg CBD, 2mg CBG and 200mg L-theanine per 12oz can. Wyld's Clementine and White Peach sparkling waters list 2mg THC plus 20mg CBD per can. A label that says "THC-infused" should still list each cannabinoid and its amount. If it doesn't, that's a reason to skip it.

How to read a THC-infused drink label

Before you buy any infused drink, check:

  • Milligrams per container and per serving. A 100mg soda may be labeled as 20 servings of 5mg. A 10mg seltzer is usually 10mg for the whole can.
  • Which THC. Look for Delta-9 named on the label or in the ingredients.
  • A lab report. A third-party certificate of analysis (COA) shows what a tested batch actually contained. Every product we carry links one on our lab results page.
  • 21+ and safety warnings. Infused drinks look like regular cans. Keep them away from kids and pets.

For dosing, start low and go slow. Health Canada's guidance for cannabis you eat or drink is to "start with a low level of THC: for example, 2.5 mg or less," and it can take up to two hours to begin to feel effects. Not medical advice; never drive after consuming THC.

Is THC-infused legal?

As of October 2026, hemp-derived Delta-9 drinks that meet the federal hemp definition are legal under federal law, and states add their own rules. Federal law is changing: Public Law 119-37, sec. 781 (signed November 12, 2025) caps hemp products at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container, and Public Law 119-103, sec. 2019 (signed September 2, 2026) delays most of that change until December 11, 2026.
