How to Prepare Cannabis Tea: A Measured THC Tea Method

The ShipSips Team

The simplest way to prepare cannabis tea is to brew your usual tea, then stir in a measured serving of a hemp-derived THC syrup or drink mix. Traditional "weed tea" recipes steep cannabis plant material in hot water with a fat such as milk or butter. That method is harder to dose and depends on access to cannabis flower, which isn't legal everywhere and isn't something we sell.

This guide explains both approaches in general terms, then walks through the measured-syrup method step by step, with honest notes on dosing. It is general information, not medical or legal advice.

How to prepare cannabis tea: two approaches

  • Traditional cannabis tea is made from the plant itself, and recipes often steep it with milk or butter. The strength of the finished cup depends on the plant material and how it was prepared. Without lab testing, you can't know how many milligrams are in your mug. Plant material can also be illegal to possess depending on where you live.
  • THC tea from a measured syrup or mix starts with a product that already has a labeled amount of hemp-derived Delta-9 THC. You brew any tea you like and add one serving. You know the number before you drink, and the product has a lab report.

We focus on the second approach because it's measurable, uses products you can buy legally where we ship, and doesn't require handling plant material.

How to make THC tea with a syrup or drink mix

Products we carry that work in tea, from their product pages:

  • Habit Pure Syrup: unflavored, 750mg hemp-derived Delta-9 THC per bottle, described as able to "go into coffee, tea, juice, or any drink you already like." The product page also says: "Measure small: a little syrup goes a very long way."
  • Hometown Hero Natural Agave Syrup: organic agave made with hemp-derived Delta-9 THC, described as a sweetener for "cocktails, mocktails, tea, and coffee." Good if you already sweeten your tea with agave or honey.
  • Hometown Hero DASH: an unflavored powder in single-serving packets that "dissolves into any beverage."

Step by step:

  • Brew a cup of tea the way you normally would: black, green, herbal or chai.
  • Let it cool slightly so it's comfortable to sip.
  • Read the label of your syrup or mix and find one serving. If the label gives a serving size in mL or a measuring cap, use it. Don't eyeball a concentrated syrup.
  • Stir in one serving, or half a serving for your first cup. Stir well.
  • Add milk, lemon or extra sweetener to taste.

If a label doesn't make its serving size clear, don't guess. Contact us or the brand first. Every product we carry links its third-party lab report on our lab results page.

How to make weed tea vs. a THC tea: the dosing difference

With homemade tea from plant material, two cups from the same pot can be very different in strength, and you have no label. With a measured product, the label tells you the milligrams. That matters because tea is easy to sip slowly and refill. A second cup is a second serving.

Health Canada's guidance for cannabis you eat or drink is to "start with a low level of THC: for example, 2.5 mg or less." It also says effects can take up to two hours to begin and up to four hours to reach full effect, and can last up to 12 hours. Have one measured cup, then wait. Start low and go slow.

How do you make tea with weed safely?

  • Measure every serving. Concentrated syrups hold a lot of THC in a small volume.
  • One cup, then wait. Don't refill early because you don't feel anything yet.
  • Label it. A mug of THC tea looks like any other mug. Keep it, and the syrup bottle, away from kids, pets and anyone under 21.
  • Don't combine with alcohol, and never drive or operate machinery after consuming THC.

Not medical advice: talk to a doctor before using THC if you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition. We don't make any claims about THC tea and health.

Iced THC tea and other ideas

The same method works cold. Brew tea, chill it, stir in a measured serving of syrup or a DASH packet, and serve over ice with lemon. For an iced tea "half and half," mix cold tea with lemonade before adding your measured serving. If you'd rather skip the mixing, a ready-to-drink can with a fixed number of milligrams is simpler. Our seltzer vs. soda vs. lemonade guide compares the canned options.

FAQ

How do you make cannabis tea?

The most measurable way is to brew regular tea and stir in one labeled serving of a hemp-derived THC syrup or drink mix. Traditional recipes steep plant material, which is harder to dose.

How to make THC tea without flower?

Use an unflavored THC syrup or a dissolvable drink-mix packet in any brewed tea, following the label's serving size.

How much THC should I put in tea?

Start small. Health Canada suggests 2.5mg or less as a starting point for cannabis you eat or drink. Follow your product's label and wait before having more.

Does hot tea affect a THC syrup?

We don't have test data on that, so we won't guess. Letting tea cool slightly before stirring in a serving is a sensible habit.
