Is 10mg of THC a Lot? What a 10mg THC Drink Means
The ShipSips TeamShare
For many adults, 10mg of THC is a moderate amount. It is not an extreme dose, but it is more than most first-timers need. If you are new, 10mg is a lot to start with. If you already know how THC affects you, 10mg is a common, middle-of-the-road can.
Ten milligrams shows up everywhere in THC drinks because it is a round, regulated-feeling number. Below, we cover where it comes from, how it compares with lighter and stronger drinks, and how to approach a 10mg can if you've never had one. This is general information, not medical advice.
Is 10mg of THC a lot for a beginner?
For a true beginner, yes. Health Canada's guidance for cannabis you eat or drink is to "start with a low level of THC: for example, 2.5 mg or less." A 10mg can is four times that suggested starting point.
That doesn't mean you can't buy a 10mg drink as your first one. It means you probably shouldn't drink the whole can in one go. Pour a quarter or a half, wait, and decide from there. Many 10mg cans are easy to split, because the whole can is the dose and you control how much of it you drink.
Is 10 mg of THC a lot for someone with experience?
Usually not. People who drink THC regularly often think of 10mg as a standard can. Tolerance, food, and the product all change how it feels, so the right amount for you comes from your own experience, not a chart.
One useful reference point: California's adult-use cannabis rules cap edible cannabis products at 10 milligrams of THC per serving and 100 milligrams per package (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 4, §17304). That is a state rule for its licensed cannabis market, not a federal rule for hemp drinks, but it shows why 10mg is so often treated as "one serving."
How much is 10mg of THC in a drink?
On a label, 10mg can appear two ways, and the difference matters:
- 10mg per can. Willie's & Soda seltzers list 10mg hemp-derived Delta-9 THC, 2mg CBD, 2mg CBG and 200mg L-theanine per 12oz can. Wyld lists 10mg Delta-9 THC per 12oz can for its Blackberry Lemon and Raspberry Lime sparkling waters, and 10mg THC with 10mg CBD in its Mango can.
- 10mg per serving. Sherpa's alcohol-free spirits and Willie's Social Tonic come in 10mg-per-1.5oz-pour versions. The 750ml bottle holds about 170mg in total. One pour is 10mg; the bottle is many servings.
Before you open anything, look for three numbers on the can or the product page: mg per container, mg per serving, and servings per container. If a label doesn't make them clear, don't guess. Every product we carry links its third-party lab report on our lab results page.
Is 10mg of THC strong compared with other drinks?
Here is where 10mg sits on the range of drinks we carry:
- 2mg: Wyld Clementine and White Peach CBD:THC sparkling waters (2mg THC plus 20mg CBD per can).
- 5mg: Hometown Hero 5mg lemonades.
- 10mg: Willie's & Soda seltzers and several Wyld sparkling waters.
- 25mg to 100mg: Hometown Hero 25mg lemonades, Torch 60mg seltzers, Sherpa 50mg and 100mg seltzers, Looper 50mg sodas, and Habit and Uncle Skunks 100mg sodas.
So 10mg is in the middle. It is stronger than the low-dose cans and far lighter than the high-potency ones. Several of those higher-milligram cans are labeled as multi-serving: Looper lists 10 servings of 5mg in a 50mg can, and Habit lists 20 servings of 5mg in a 100mg can.
How to approach a 10mg THC drink: start low, go slow
- Split it the first time. Pour a quarter or half of the can. You can always have more later; you can't have less.
- Give it time. Health Canada says cannabis you eat or drink can take up to two hours to begin to take effect and up to four hours to reach full effect. Everyone is different, so don't read that as a promise either way. Just don't reach for a second can early.
- Don't mix it with alcohol, and never drive or operate machinery after drinking THC.
- Keep notes. Product, amount, how it went. That's how you find your own number.
Not medical advice: if you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, or have a health condition, check with a doctor before using THC.

FAQ
Is 10mg of THC a lot for a first time?
For most first-timers, yes. Health Canada suggests starting with 2.5mg or less in products you eat or drink. Splitting a 10mg can is an easy way to get there.
Is 10mg of THC strong?
It is a moderate amount. Experienced adults often treat it as a standard serving; beginners usually find it strong. Your own response is the only reliable guide.
Is a 10mg drink the same as a 10mg edible?
The milligrams are the same. Health Canada's timing guidance covers cannabis you eat or drink alike, but individual products can feel different, so treat any new product as a fresh start.
How many servings is a 10mg can?
It depends on the label. Most 10mg cans we carry list 10mg for the whole can. Always check whether the number is per container or per serving.
