Do THC Drinks Show Up on a Drug Test? Yes — Here's the Science

We sell THC drinks, so you might expect a soothing answer here. You're not going to get one, because the truthful answer is short: yes, THC drinks show up on a drug test — even the federally legal, hemp-derived, lab-tested kind we carry. If your job, custody agreement, probation terms, or athletic career depends on passing a THC screen, do not drink THC drinks. That's the whole article; everything below is the why and the how long.

Why "it was legal" doesn't matter to the test

The Delta-9 THC in a hemp-derived seltzer is the same molecule as the Delta-9 THC in dispensary cannabis. The 2018 Farm Bill didn't change the chemistry — it changed the paperwork, defining "hemp" by where the THC came from and how concentrated it is by dry weight. A drug test can't read paperwork.

Standard screens don't even look for THC itself. They look for THC-COOH, the metabolite your liver produces as it breaks THC down. Your liver metabolizes a 5mg hemp seltzer exactly the way it metabolizes any other THC, so the metabolite is identical too. There is no test on the market that can tell hemp-derived Delta-9 from marijuana-derived Delta-9, because there is no chemical difference to find.

How long THC from a drink stays detectable

THC-COOH is fat-soluble, which means it lingers far longer than the buzz does. Real-world windows vary a lot with dose, frequency, body composition, and metabolism, but the broad ranges look like this:

  • Urine test (the most common): a single low-dose drink may clear in 1–3 days for an occasional user. Regular use — a few drinks a week — can stay detectable for 1–3 weeks. Daily use can push past 30 days.
  • Saliva test: roughly 24–72 hours after use.
  • Blood test: active THC clears in hours to a couple of days, though these tests are rare outside of DUI stops.
  • Hair test: up to 90 days. Uncommon, but unforgiving.

Note what's not on that list: any window measured in hours for a urine screen. One 10mg can on Friday night can absolutely still be detectable at a Tuesday screening, especially if it wasn't your first can that month.

Does the dose matter?

Somewhat — a single 2.5mg session can deposits less metabolite than a 100mg soda — but less than people hope. Cutoff thresholds on standard urine screens (typically 50 ng/mL) were designed to catch occasional cannabis use, and even modest, fully legal drink habits can cross them. Treat every dose as detectable and you'll never be surprised.

What about detox drinks and home remedies?

The search results are full of products promising to flush THC before a test. The evidence behind them is thin to nonexistent. Most work by diluting your urine (which labs detect and flag), and none change what's stored in fat tissue. Time is the only reliable clearance mechanism. We'd rather tell you that plainly than let a $40 miracle bottle make the decision for you.

The honest bottom line

THC drinks are a genuinely great alcohol alternative — that's why we built a whole store around them. But they are not invisible to drug testing, and no honest retailer should imply otherwise. If you're subject to testing: skip them, full stop. If you're not, start low and enjoy — our dosing guide covers where to begin, and every product we carry has a lab report on our lab results page so you know exactly how many milligrams you're metabolizing.
